Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun was established in 1906 as Imperial Forest Research Institute. The FRI is a premier institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). The Forest Research Institute was conferred with the status of a deemed to be university in 1991 by the Government of India on recommendation of the UGC. It is notified as FRI University vide notification.
The main aim of FRI is to Impart education in different branches of forestry and environment, to provide for research and advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of forestry and environment, to create consciousness about forest and environment among people through forestry extension programmes and to carry out such other activities as may be necessary and desirable to further the safeguarding of environment and protection of forests and wildlife.
Campus of Forest Research Institute :
The FRI campus is set in a lush green estate spread over 450 hectares, with the outer Himalaya forming its back drop, the institute main building is an impressive edifice, marrying Greco-Roman and colonial styles of architecture, with a plinth area of 2.5 experimental field areas for conducting forestry research, quite in keeping with the best of its kind anywhere in the world.

FRI University has an active centralized placement office functioning throughout the year, with activities maximum between April and August. The recruitment are based upon parameters like job profile, growth prospects and remuneration package of the company. Various Industries/organizations visit the campus for interviews.
University provides furnished guest houses as accommodation for the members of selection teams. On an average 50% of the students get placements through the campus interviews.
